Having joined Waterford Crystal in 1978 at the age of 17 years old, Eugene spent the next 8 years training as an apprentice, until he qualified as a Master Glass Cutter in 1986. After 10 years of developing his craft, he was promoted to Training Instructor within the famous cutting department where he trained and helped the other Master Cutters to perfect their skills. Having left Waterford Crystal after 28years, he decided to launch Íona Crystal and using traditional methods of Mouth Blown and Hand Cutting techniques, he set about designing and producing wonderful hand crafted Irish Crystal.

Wedge Cutting is used for intricate cutting on Iona Crystal pieces. These deep wedge shaped cuts, cut at 90 degree angles which create prisms that diffuse the light and intensifies its reflection. Before the crystal is cut, it is marked with a felt tip pen to give a rough guide to the design. However, it is the cutter’s own sight and feel that are the true guides to position and depth of the cuts. Wedge cutting includes “Upright Cuts”, “Starburst cuts”, “ Swerve Cuts” and diamond cutting known as “Karo”. Eugene has designed and produced a vast range of Iona Crystal products including World Championship Trophy’s, National & International Golfing Trophy’s Exclusive Family Pattern Stemware just to mention a few.

Eugene lives in Dungarvan, Co. Waterford which is the home of Íona Crystal.

Jane Jermyn began studying ceramics in her mid 40’s and has been a practising artist for 18 years. In 2001 she was awarded her BA from West Wales School of the Arts and her MA in 2009 from National College of Art and Design in Dublin. In 2003 she was an invited demonstrator at Aberystwyth International Ceramics Festival where she demonstrated her ‘Wet-firing ‘ technique. In 2011 she was an invited demonstrator / exhibitor at the 1st International Ceramic Art Festival (ICAF) Sasama, Japan and the 5th International Festival of Ceramics and Dance, Na-eri, South Korea. She has taken part in International symposia in Turkey, Estonia, Cuba, Croatia, Bosnia, Poland, Slovenia, Latvia and Belarus. In 2010 she undertook a 6 week residency at Nelson Mandela Metropolitian University, South Africa and led a workshop in paperclay making and various firing techniques in Malta. In 2012 she undertook a month long residency in France and in 2014 she undertook a 3 month residency at Canberra Potters’ Society in Australia.

There have been articles on her work published in ‘CeramicsTECHNICAL’ No 13 and ‘New Ceramics/Neue Keramik’ No 5/08 and ‘Ceramics Ireland’ No 27/2011. She has exhibited in USA, France, Spain, Slovenia, Croatia, Turkey, Estonia, Cuba, Poland, Belarus, UK, China, France, Japan, South Korea, Slovenia, Latvia, Ireland and Australia. Later In 2014 she is an invited exhibitor in a major international ceramics exhibition in New Dehli, India.

About her work – Biomorphic Forms
Her latest body of work is an amalgamation of various strands that she has been exploring over the past couple of years. These abstract organic forms suggest aspects of the natural world – combining geological and organic references. These come from the hundreds of images of rock surfaces, geological formations and the weathered decay that I have taken. These are a source of continuing inspiration and she sees the resulting pieces as a celebration rather than an imitation of nature. The pieces are hand-built by a coiling and pinching method in using various clays and finishes.

Len Canton, a self-taught craftsman from Cork city, has been working leather for almost 30 years. He produces a range of shoulder bags, satchels and other large bags, purses, wristbands, hair slides, key rings and belts. Len uses vegetable-tanned leather, produced by a long-established family business in the English Midlands. He hand-stitches his bags and other products using a strong, harness maker’s saddle-stitch. Over the years, Len has developed and refined his own methods for dyeing and embellishing his leatherwork.

Surface decoration on his work includes Celtic knot-work and motifs inspired by prehistoric Irish rock carvings, such as spirals. While his work is very much rooted in the traditional, it also has a contemporary appeal. Len is a member of the Design and Crafts Council of Ireland and of the Centre for Environmental Living and Training (CELT). He is now living in the countryside near Lismore, Co. Waterford.
